Since no rolling or cutting is necessary, drop biscuits are the simplest to make and make a great and filling camping breakfast. While the biscuits are baking, the savoury gravy with sage flavouring can be quickly put together.
PREP: 20 MINUTES
TOTAL: 35 MINUTES
SERVES: 6
Ingredients
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted, divided
2 cups all-purpose baking mix (such as Bisquick)
2 ounces Cheddar cheese, shredded (about ½ cup)
4¼ cups whole milk, divided
1 pound pork breakfast sausage
⅓ cup (about 1½ ounces) all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
⅛ teaspoon dried sage
Directions
Step 1
Fit a grilling grate over the direct heat of blazing embers, or heat the barbeque to medium (about 350° to 450°F). Aluminum foil should be cut into 6 (18-inch) squares, and each square should be compacted into a 1 1/2–2 inch ball. In a 4 12 to 5-quart cast-iron Dutch oven, arrange foil balls on the bottom. Cover with the lid and heat for 10 minutes over the heat source of a grilling grate or a camp stove.
Step 2
1 tablespoon of the melted butter should be used to grease a 9-inch circular cake pan. In a medium bowl, blend together the baking mix, cheese, 34 cup of the milk, and 2 tablespoons of the melted butter. In the oiled cake pan, drop heaping tablespoonfuls of the dough. In the Dutch oven that has been heated, put the pan on top of the foil balls and cover it with the lid. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the biscuits are done and browned on the bottom.
Step 3
In the meantime, preheat a 12-inch cast-iron pan (either on a grilling grate or a camping stove set to medium heat). Add the sausage, and cook it while stirring for 6 to 8 minutes, or until it is no longer pink and crumbly. Add the final tablespoon of melted butter while stirring. Add the flour and stir to incorporate before cooking for one minute. Add the remaining 3 12 cups of milk gradually and mix until incorporated. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce starts to thicken. Add the sage, pepper, and salt after that. Over the biscuits, spoon the gravy
